A couple of weeks ago, Wee Monster and I were lucky enough to get to meet the latest arrivals at Norstarr Kennels - four beautiful Siberian huskies.
These little guys (3 boys and a girl) represent another generation of carefully breed Siberians - Norstarr chose to import semen from a German racing champion to complement their racing lines. Their dogs, huskies and hounds, have been leaders in the racing scene for the last couple of decades, in part because they have beautiful structures. (There's an awful lot of hard work and training and things too, but starting with dogs who are built to run is very important.)
While we cuddled puppies, we chatted about vet bills and some of the challenges J and I are facing with our elderly dogs. Norstarr has a couple of older dogs, who are largely free of the aches and pains, the torn ACLs and arthritis that our rescue dogs suffer from. Their dogs are lean and fit and healthy, with great conformation that allows them to run effortlessly for years and years.
Of course, it's not just about the breeding. These puppies have already had a lot of TLC - veterinary care, living in a whelping box next to the family bedrooms for 24 hour care, socialisation with people and dogs (and babies!) - not to mention their mum who is devoted to her little ones.
When the puppies go to their new homes, it won't be because of an impulse buy from a pet shop. Norstarr will select new homes that will suit each puppy's temperament and that can support the energy and enthusiasm of little racers. Norstarr will stay in touch with the new homes, available to offer advice and assistance as needed.
It's always amazing to cuddle cute puppies, with their floppy ears, but it's incredible to consider what they'll grow up into - what eye colours, who'll be lead dog material, what kind of temperaments they'll have. One thing is for sure, they'll be amazing racers and beautiful dogs!
